The year is 1972. At 6.33 pm on December 19th, three brave men set sail. Their names are Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Harrison H. Schmitt, and they are aboard the Apollo CSM-114. The mission is Apollo 17, and it will be the final manned mission to the moon.
This year marks 50 years since the first humans set foot on the cheese in the sky, and at Lampemesteren, we have chosen to mark the occasion by launching Coordinates—some of the most exciting lamps from Flos—in stunning new colours. The quirky collection celebrates science and looks like dots and lines in a cartesian coordinate system, complete with right angles and scientific precision. Up until now, the lamp has only been available in Champagne Aluminium, but we are now launching it in a lovely Moon grey.
The colour named after the moon is a great fit for the neat design as it is, and the lovely tubes crossing the X, Y, and Z axes in the coordinate system create a stunning light. From an artistic viewpoint, the Cypriot designer Michael Anastassiades manages to combine science and aesthetics, and there is no mistaking the elegance and sophistication of this truly unique design.
The warm, inviting light stands in contrast to the neat, almost cold design. Michael Anastassiades is a talented designer and civil engineer, and this is clearly reflected in the method that led to Coordinates, which combines art with geometric and mathematical elements. The lamp was originally designed for the historic restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York.
The scientific approach is one of the headlines when it comes to Anastassiades’ design, just like it is for moon landings. During the Apollo 17 mission, the three astronauts were tasked with studying the geology of the moon and the effects of space travel on five live mice named Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, and Phooey. The team hiked on the moon three times and drove over 35 km in the moon car before making their way home.
The entire Coordinates collection from Flos—including the floor lamp, the many pendants, and the wall lamp—is now available in Moon Grey, contributing a decorative touch to your living room, kitchen, and bedroom. Combine the different models, or use a single Coordinates lamp to introduce a touch of space-age fantasy and imagination to your décor.
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the last manned mission to the moon with a Coordinates lamp in Moon Grey—and celebrate the end of the classic Space Race. The Apollo 17 mission was also the longest manned moon landing with the astronauts spending 12 and a half days up there. The team also beat the record for longest distance from the moon landing vessel, travelling a full 7.6 km away from it.
