Benjamin Hubert is a talented British designer who, despite his young age, has already received a range of impressive awards for his work. Hubert graduated from Loughborough University in 2006 and went on to found the London-based studio LAYER, specialising in industrial furniture and lamp design, which has gone on to spark collaborations with international manufacturers in Europe and Asia. With his business, Hubert has designed a range of big, small, and limited edition projects for private and public use, which in turn has led to international recognition and a series of prestigious awards.

Furthermore, LAYER collaborates with big, forward-thinking business like Nike, Google, Bang & Olufsen, Samsung, and Braun to create products to help define the way we will live, work, and communicate in the future. The brand works to analyse human behaviour to create products that engage with the users and their experiences in a meaningful way. In Hubert’s own words: ’To justify introducing a new product into the world there needs to be a tangible benefit of its core, something that sets it above and beyond its predecessors’. He doesn’t just design products for the sake of designing them but rather with a focus on functionality, usability, and necessity.

Aside from his own brand, Benjamin Hubert has various lucrative collaborations with famous international brands, including &Tradition, for which he designed Spinning serien; Italian Kundalini, for which he created the Frame wall lamp, the Finnish brand Muuto, for which he designed the unique and timeless Strand collection, not to mention the Italian company Fabbian, for which he created the unique Roofer design. He has also collaborated briefly with the Danish brand Fritz Hansen to create the simple and stylish Magazine Holder.

In his work, Hubert is very inspired by the simplicity of various kinds of craftsmanship, which he employs in his designs through unconventional materials like cork, concrete, and paper with functionality at the forefront of this mind. He is also famous for his lively approach to design and his sense of detail with regards to every aspect of the design process. Whenever Benjamin Hubert is involved, the result is a unique, aesthetic, and highly functional design.
