**What exactly do we celebrate on Singles Day?

Single Days (or Guanggun Jie, as the day is known in China) were originally about breaking the monotony and loneliness of being single. At least that is what four students at Nanjing University allegedly discussed in 1993. They decided to celebrate the single life with a day of fun activities with friends. It was no coincidence that the 11. November was the date of the Singles Days. The date is the day with the most "singles" (1s) 1-1/1-1.

Subsequently, this tradition quickly spread to other universities in China and later to other countries around the world. In the early years, Single Days were seen as a countermeasure to Valentine's Day and the offers were therefore mainly aimed at singles. Nowadays, pretty much any type of product can be offered on Singles Day. Just like we know it from the Black Friday sales. Whether you are single or not, it is important that you treat yourself.
