The 3-step function allows you to dim the lamp using the switch on the lamp. A bulb with this function cannot be used with a dimmer connection.
With a 3-step bulb, also known as a scene switch, each lamp is dimmable in three stages using the switch on the lamp. Here's how it works: Switch on once: Full power. Switch on twice: Approx. 50% of stage 1. Switch on three times: Approx. half of stage 2 (The level varies from bulb to bulb).
For this to work, the lamp must be switched on and off quickly in succession. Most bulbs will then maintain the last level set.
The 3-step bulb can also be used in a pendant light; simply use the switch on the wall to set the level.
